During the week of Feb. 10 – Feb. 16, 2008, Consumer-Reviews.us downloaded the latest release of MP3 Rocket and tested it against Limewire, Frostwire and Bearshare.

“For the testing, both MP3Rocket and Limewire were run on the same computer. They both had their own incoming and download folders, but the same shared folder. The software downloads were divided with 1/2 of bandwidth between them. The 700MB cable and gave each 350MB limits. The uploads were limited both to 15MB each. Searches were conducted using exact phrases and searched and downloads used the same file names.

Search Results
Both had close to the same search results for the same file names at times MP3Rocket had more results at times Limewire, so they were both pretty much equal.

Download Results
Once again they were pretty much equal here. Ten files at a time were downloaded both simultaneously and bandwidth was shared equally between the two. Some files MP3Rocket completed first some Limewire. With all files being of same name a size and started approximately at the same time. Some of the files MP3Rocket found more sources others Limewire found more about 50/50 here. MP3Rocket did complete the total groups of files before Limewire in all cases MP3Rocket was about 20 percent faster.

The last test mixed popular files and files that only had one or two sources. The MP3Rocket did find more sources to download from on less popular files and would complete these files also about 20 percent faster.

Additional Features
It is Consumer-Reviews.us opinion that the additional features is where the MP3 Rocket is a clear winner over Limewire. MP3Rocket also provides free TV, Radio and Game streams. MP3Rocket was easier to set up and use and there is also a better display of information on the MP3 Rocket screen and simpler to use. In our opinion MP3Rocket is the better of the two choices.”

Records, have accused Lime Wire and the company’s officers of copyright infringement, according to a federal lawsuit filed Aug 2007 in U.S. District Court in New York. Case 1:06-cv-05936-GEL. Despite the ongoing lawsuit, Limewire continues to enhance its software and has recently released two major open source technologies that will affect the future of global file sharing.

Possibly due to the pressure of its current lawsuit, Limewire has released technology that can now block the sharing of all files without a copyright license (although the blocking technology is not currently turned on as default). The second Limewire technology recently released and adopted by MP3Rocket is improved file filtering technology that blocks “fake files” and spam files from the enemies of files sharing and spammers. The new “TigerTree” hash technology blocks spammer’s fake files, such as those containing spam, viruses and Trojans.

The TigerTree Spam filter (included in the latest 5.0.3 version of the MP3Rocket) works by storing information about files, where search results can be filtered by keywords, size, verified SHA-1 hashes or even IP address. Information about what is spam is gathered through two methods: One, which includes the user marking which results they find to be fake, and another which covers the learning of items commonly found in search results. Both of these measures are used to give each file a rating and once this rating goes over a certain threshold, the file is flagged as spam.

The filter is designed to learn by storing information. When a search is conducted, the user can block certain results by key words, size, verified SHA-1 hashes and/or IP address. Taking this information, the filter will then begin to learn by creating spam profiles. If a future search result fits a malicious profile, the file is labeled as spam.
